Friday Night Lights: Edgar Nicholls 10000

Bromsgrove & Redditch AC Hosted the innaugral Edgar Nicholls 10000 – three 25 lap races around The Abbey Stadium on a Friday Night. As the sun settled low in the sky two K&D toed the line in their 10000m debut on the track.

Darren John showed he’s returning to full health and fast feet with a 37:02.3 – just missing the club 10,000m track record of 36:55 inaugurated earlier this summer by Steve Whatmore. It didn’t help that by lap 16 he thought the record was 36:25 – thinking he was well off pace. Darren hadn’t broken 18min since June 18 due to his blood clotted lungs – going through 5000m in 17:40 wasn’t part of the plan. But after 8 laps you get a bit fuzzy! 25 laps do weird things to your brain!

Behind Darren was former Tipton man and now K&D passionista Stuart Male. Taking on the 25 laps Stuart wanted a sub-40. A fast start at 38 minute pace left him in a world of suffering over the last 5000m but he dug in and showed serious cajones to run 39:32.4. Both Darren and Stuart loved it – it’s a unique experience running 25 track laps!

As the sun set and the floodlights came on the atmosphere grew. In the ‘A’ race, under the spotlights, Adam Stokes of Bristol & West ran a superb solo 32:01.2 – lapping almost the entire field. Midlands running royalty Hayley Carruthers set her 10000 PB at 33:03.8. SWIFT.

We’re encouraging K&D’ers to dip their toe into the track – the next opportunity is Wednesday 4th September, Leamington’s Edmonscote Stadium at 8pm for £5. They run heats based on estimated finishing time so you won’t be out of your depth – especially if you’re sub 25min parkrun
(Based on last time).

Speak to Darren if you fancy a 3000m blast on Wednesday. Perfect training for your 5k.
