Men’s XC Results: Birmingham Division 1, Race 3 – Coundon Hall Park

, ,

After two races we K&D men found ourselves in 13th place (A team) and 7th place (B team). With 14th-16th places getting relegated at the end of the season there was no doubt it was all to play for as about 20 of us headed to Coundon Park in Coventry for race 3 of 4. The course was fairly flat and a bit muddy in places but generally nothing too challenging to fear.

The opposition was also out in force and so we had a real battle on our hands and were not going to have it all our own way. Nonetheless we had Kirk Giles back in the squad, the return of the hugely experienced Pete Grimes to bolster the ranks and in addition Gareth Wainwright was making his long awaited cross country debut for the club.

It was generally felt that the field was even stronger than in the previous race. Overall Joe Read was again the first home for the club in 48th followed in by Dan Rebeiro. Unfortunately Chris Sharp had to drop out mid race with a chest issue. Gareth Wainwright had a great debut which promises more to come and Chris Morgan and Pat Moss performed strongly again. Pete Grimes,Kirk & Torsten were the next guys to finish with Chris Thurley also performing well.

The B team packed in really well with about 8 people finishing within 30 places or so.

So where do we find ourselves overall after the race. The A team are in 13th place still and were 13th on the day but with Cannock and Kenilworth on virtually the same points this is going to go to the wire at the final venue – Warwick University. The B team finished 9th on the day but also remain in 7th place overall.

Massive thanks to all who turned out and special mention to Steve Evans and Chris Quarmby for offering their services to help on the day – hugely appreciated by me and the other guys who simply ran.

So onwards to Warwick Uni where we hope to have another large turnout and maybe even the support of a few other club members. Its going to be close but with a fair wind we could stay up and what a great achievement that would be!
