THE RUNDOWN – 9TH OCTOBER: Alcester 10k,National Road Relays, Rugby 10, Palma 10k/Half, Royal Parks Half , Worcestershire Beacon, Chicago Marathon & Parkrun

A jam packed schedule this week, with K&D members racing all over the country and in some cases even further afield! A selection of phots from the events appear at the bottom of this section

We start our trip around the globe in sunny Warwickshire for the Alcester 10k. Sole K&D representative Chris Revell put in a performance worthy of a Hollywood movie (his words not mine) to dip just inside the 36 minute barrier for the first time, and finish as 6th overall (1st V40).

After an excellent performance at the Midlands two weeks ago, K&D women managed to enter two teams for the Nationals for the first time. Racing against some international standard athletes, the A team finished in 56th, beating teams such as Bedford and County and Mansfield Harriers, and the B team finished 69th. All good signs for the cross country season ahead!

Rugby 10 was the final race in the WRRL, and 7 K&D members made the short trip down the A45 for the lumpy course. First home was Juliet Jones who finished an excellent first V45 despite competing at the road relays the previous day, with Linda Whitehead also running well to finish first V65.

Some K&D runners clearly enjoyed running in the hot weather the British summer brought, so took a short trip to Mallorca for the Palma 10k and HM. Kathy Bailey and Bob Taylor both ran the 10k, finishing in 50:09 and 52:55 respectively, with Lloyd Barton taking on the longer distance, running 1:46.

The ever popular Royal Parks half made a return for 2022, with over 16,000 runners taking on some of he same routes as the London Marathon a week earlier, as well as the flat and fast paths of Hyde Park. Results haven’t been published at the time of writing, but Hannah Hopkin ran well to finish in 1:58.

The scenic Malvern Hills are the setting for the tough Worcestershire Beacon 7 trail race. Again, no results at the time of writing but chairman Paul Winwood tamed the hills to finish in 1:16.

You know it’s a special week when Mallorca isn’t the most glamorous destination on the Rundown, but 4 K&D members made the trip stateside to run the latest World Marathon Major, Chicago. John Garside was first home to finish his 44th (!) marathon in 3:57, with Mike McDonald not far behind in 3:59. Smita Deshpande and Subhash Agarwalla also finished close together in 5:19 and 5:28.
