Stratford Summer Six:

WRRL Action took place over the weekend and despite showers that drenched runners the throngs of K&D splashed their way to success.  Amanda O’Leary and Jane Hunt both took brilliant age-category wins.

Congratulations to Chris Sharp who celebrated the news that Flick is expecting their second child with a strong run to finish 6th overall and first K&D Man (32:11). He was followed by Chris Morgan who continued his good form with a 12th overall (34:06) and Men’s Captain Torsten Roesler who nipped into the top-30 finishing 29th (36:17).

Rosie Marsh (41:01) continued her brilliant run of form this summer by finishing 7th Female overall and, most importantly, that K&D first woman crown. She just pipped Amanda O’Leary (41:27). It’s great to see Amanda back and running strongly.  Jane Hunt took third K&D Woman (45:17) to go with her age-category win.

Brueton parkrun

Gareth Wainwright was the meat in a BRAT sandwich in the Brueton top-3 on Saturday. He ran 17:12 to split up the two BRAT invaders and stake K&D colours on the podium. With many of our runners doing the Summer 6 on Saturday evening our numbers were down but Paul Williams did the Summer Six/parkrun double finishing second K&D man in 19:07 (and a new PB! Clearly taking it easy for the Summer 6 Paul?). Third K&D man was Gareth’s brother Ainsley (19:31) who recently joined the club. A little sibling rivalry to spice up the coming years!

Mary Heald continued her run of great form by improving her PB once again. Dropping her PB to 20:15 Mary edged closer to a sub 20 minute time and finished first K&D woman. Rachel Aston took the honours for second woman in 23:53 just pipping Sarah Cattell who crossed the line in 24:03.

There were excellent PB’s this week for Paul Williams (19:07), Mary Heald (20:15) and Gail Partridge (32:19) who has continued her great improvements recently. Congratulations to those three musketeers and their weekend success.

Conkers parkrun

Getting up early on Saturday before their 24 hours relay race in teams of five three of K&D’s silliest members headed over to the beautiful Conkers parkrun. Phillip Lindsey finished first (30:16), Kate Marsh second (30:17) and Darren John third (30:17) as all three enjoyed gentle pre-Thunder Run run to stretch the legs. Congratulations to Philip and Kate who both put up with a grumpy Darren moaning about how this ruined his streak of sub-18’s at parkrun. They were both very patient with him!

Cheltenham parkrun

Cheltenham were blessed with a visit on Saturday by Anne Gay who ran 36:23.

Penrose parkrun

Steve Marks popped up in Penrose to run 34:16

Great running team!

Much Wenlock Olympan Half Marathon

Men’s Team Captain Torsten Roesler competed in the Much Wenlock Olympian Half Marathon over the weekend and came 4th with a time of 1:28:23. The course was pretty challenging, with a few naughty climbs along the way. It was roughly 50:50 road and trails making a sub-90 minute clocking even more impressive..

Although don’t let him tell you that makes him an Olympian now. That’s not how it works Torsten!

Brueton parkrun

Gareth Wainwright’s achilles niggles have cleared up and his running is nibbling down towards those low seventeen minute times again. This week he ran 17:21 followed closely by Darren John in 17:39. Tim Price, fresh from his London Marathon BBC appearance and slightly less fresh from the night out at the club do on Friday night finished third in 19:07.

For some reason a number of runners were a bit slower on Saturday morning. It can’t be down to too much wine, beer or prosecco the night before at the awards bash can it? They all kept insisting they were only drinking water…

Kathy Bailey certainly behaved herself Friday night because on Saturday morning she was only four seconds off breaking her PB. She ran 21:49 to continue her hot-streak. Only a matter of time. Behind her Jane Hunt matched Kathy’s efforts. Again only 4 seconds off her PB. Jane ran 22:16. Louise Marklew rounded out a quick ladies top 3 running 22:43.

Two PB’s this weekend as Gregory Turner and Sarah Church ran 20:40 and 37:36 respectively. Well done!

Frimley Lodge parkrun

A partridge in a parkrun sounds like an episode from Steve Coogan’s repetoire. This week though it was Gail Partridge. She was, did and indeed is, err, indeed bouncing back with a 35:55. Back of the net.

Kingsbury Water parkrun

I hope they… Battson’d down the hatches, because there was a Gail at Frimley and a Battson, a Simon Battson at Kingsbury. Simon ran 26:00. Nice.

Penrose parkrun

Jane Cant showed she can as she ran Dan… Man. Her cup parkrunneth over with a time of 30:39 at Penrose parkrun.

Stratford-upon-Avon

Not to be confused with Nick Knowles our very own Andy Knowles ran 22:10 in the Bard’s home. I hope he didn’t tread mud all through his house after. That’d never do.

Here is all your weekends non-WRRL related red-hot action:

Boston Marathon:

With an injury hit build up and late fitness tests leaving his participation in doubt right up until the pre-race period Chris Sharp turned difficulties into longer-term positives with a brave, brave run in Boston. Chris attacked the first half of the race in 1:20:31 and despite a difficult second half still managed a sub-3 run. Finishing in 2:58:44. While he’ll no doubt feel mixed emotions in the immediate aftermath to run sub-3 in such trying circumstances show’s his qualities as a runner.  Hopefully the Sharp’s enjoy the rest of their time in Boston and congrats on racing one of the most storied races in running.

Take some time to rest the legs and recover and the show pony legs will be back up to full speed soon enough! Success in a marathon isn’t always measured in finish time alone. Success can be found in the journey and overcoming obstacles and Chris showed that in bucket loads.

Lydney parkrun

You have to feel a bit for the poor woman who previously held the Lydney parkrun female course record. Jane Evans turned up on Saturday and was in the mood for breaking records. Bettering the previous course best by a woman by one minute and seventeen seconds Jane Evans took the course record down in fine fashion. Jane ran 18:01. and finished 2nd overall at Lydney. The only runner in front of her had to run a massive PB just to nudge ahead.  Read more
